I've wanted a new backpack for school that will hold more than my current (very thin) shoulder bag since I started packing coffee/lunch and layers for unpredictable weather. I looked through reviews and photos to determine if I need a regular size or XL. I ordered both because I wasn't sure. Since the other reviews are pretty accurate in terms of materials etc, I'll mainly be talking about size. (Note, however, that people thought the zippers broke upon arrival. Some of these people, I think, are wrong. You only need to pull once in each direction and it will fix itself.) Regular size fits many things! I have a Surface Pro 4, so I don't need to pack anything larger in length/width than a binder/folder that can hold 8.5" x 11" paper. Normal size makes it comfortable! (I always thought Kanken backpacks looked too small for them, but I didn't have one, so that's fine.) My photos show: a standard folder plus each empty/flat packet; Two sizes stacked on top of each other (that understates the difference if you ask me, XL is HUGE); Depth of two sizes next to each other (about the same); and the smaller size is filled with pretty much anything I want to take with me on any given day. It has two binders, two small textbooks, a paperback, a food container in front, my hydro flask and laptop charger in the inner bottle holders, a travel mug in one of the outer bottle holders (if you put something in, of course) in the inner bottle holder, the outside gets pretty tight), plus a few school/cosmetics in the smaller pockets. There is still enough space to roll up the sweatshirt and put it inside. And importantly, when I (5'1") wear it I don't look like a midget in comparison. (Style is important to me!) I find it quite comfortable to wear despite all the weight. (Maybe will I'll upgrade after owning it longer.) Basically, the smaller size is exactly what I wanted! I, who had a huge binder and several full-size textbooks, would probably still be able to get by with a smaller one. I'm very happy with this purchase and plan to keep and use the smaller size!
