Review on πŸͺ‘ Elevate Your Comfort with Harmony Ergonomics Air Chair in Sleek Black Design by Roxana Kotarba

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Great idea, disappointing execution, poor lumbar support position

When I saw this innovative office chair design I had high hopes that it would make a great replacement for my good office chair that has been around for 15 years. Those hopes were dashed with this nearly $300 (at the time of this review) chair. I was expecting a more thoughtful and customizable product at this price point. The basic idea of the Harmony Air Chair is simple and ingenious: using flat elastic bands as the seat and backrest, tubular steel frame with ergonomic design, adjustable backrest, support armrest and height. A lot of what makes a chair suitable depends on who it is for. I like big office chairs, and that's partly because they're (let's say) "big-boned." At 5'10" I'm taller than average, but not by much. It's summer now and I'm wearing shorts in my home office as I write this. I hope this knowledge puts my review in the right context for the reader SHORT VERSION I like the elastic seats, but too few adjustments and poor workmanship of some plastic parts ruin what could have been a very nice and comfortable office chair Pros: + Plastic straps provide a relaxed seating base that supports me well + Designed for tall people people (up to 350 lbs) + Comfortable armrests and highly adjustable + Backrest reclines more than most office chairs + Headrest is comfortable and has a good range of adjustment for me + Overall construction is solid and stable Cons: Lumbar support is in the Frame built in and NOT adjustable It's too low for me - The molded ends of the straps (where they bolt to the frame are nd) are rough barefoot or in stockings - The maximum seat height is too low for me (I'm only 5'10") - The bottom of the seat cannot be tilted. Tools Required to Adjust Armrest Width I had high hopes, which were dashed by this clever design. The idea was brilliant, but the execution wasn't enough. The flaws I see can be addressed with a thoughtful redesign. Read on for more information. SCOPE OF DELIVERY The airchair is delivered in a large and rather heavy box. All chair components are included: seat back, seat base, headrest, armrests, 5-point base, pneumatic support stand, box with wheels for stand and accessories, instructions and tools needed for assembly. need a return. With the Air Chair, the components are densely packed and quite heavy, so it's probably worth splitting the outer box for easier access. Items are well packed in the box, everything came without damage. ASSEMBLY The instructions were pretty good and worth reading. The tools were packed in the instructions and there were enough for assembly. Most of the bolts and nuts are already positioned in the frame. Extra fat and nut included, which were common "back then" but are extraordinarily generous today. Putting the larger pieces together could have been easier with a second pair of hands. I assembled mine myself so it can be done with care. There are two areas that caused minor problems during assembly, but not major ones: The rear and seat bolt flanges are very tight to the frame. I had to force it - Be sure to pay attention to the orientation of the recliner. First I flipped mine. IN USE The Air Chair is in my home office, where I usually (this summer) wear shorts. I am tall and 5 feet 10 inches tall. When it comes to office chairs, context matters. The stretch fabric of the Air Chair (below) is very comfortable. Elastic bands are a good concept that offers a stress-free seating surface that is airy and cool. The seat swivels, but there is NO recline adjustment to the underside of the seat, which I think is expected of a chair of this caliber. The height of the Air seat is adjusted by a lever in the usual place under the seat. I use the Air Chair at its maximum height and it's a little shorter than I'd like. The air cylinder is slightly larger than usual and I expect it to be the heart of a 350-pound air chair. But it seems to sit very low in the 5-point base, resulting in the chair's height adjustment range being less than my old executive office chair and barely enough for me. A NOTICE. If you need more height, you can get enough by wrapping the bottom of the cylinder. with sheet metal padding to allow it to sit higher in the 5-point base without compromising chair stability. My experience with the Air Chair was marred by the molded ends of the straps. The molded ends of the straps (where they bolt to the frame) are tough on the legs. The molding seams are poorly cleaned, and the patterns molded on the plastic surface have scratched edges. Hosiery may have a limited lifespan in this chair and can be easily washed off. The screw heads are not completely countersunk and partially protrude a bit. The edges of the Phillips screw slot may be rough. The Air Chair's seat back has the same relaxed surface. The lumbar support is at the very bottom of my back where it presses against the back of my pelvis and doesn't support the lumbar curve of my spine. The lumbar support is integrated into the backrest frame and is not adjustable. This is a big disadvantage for me. The lumbar support is positioned correctly for me in my old, inexpensive executive office. The inflatable deck chair rotates a full 120 degrees. I love that aspect of the design, including the unusual side release for the back. A small pneumatic cylinder lifts the backrest when released. It won't *lift you back :-). The headrest is very comfortable and has a good adjustment range. As he stretched his neck and pressed into the pillow, stretching the elastics a little, a few strands of hair got stuck in the fabric. Actually, it's nothing to worry about. The armrests can be adjusted up and down within a comfortable range for me. They can be rotated about every 20 degrees with one stop. They are soft and comfortable. Once I set the width during build they are well spaced. To change the width of the armrest, loosen the 3 bolts and nuts on each side with the tools (included). I don't think it's a big deal for one person use, but as a family office chair it might be. The 5 wheel stand and stands are very similar to any other office chair. My chair is black. I think the burgundy color is more attractive and the gray color is pretty pretty too. CONCLUSIONS The Harmony Air chair is a good idea, but without sufficient thought. At the time of this review, the Air Chair retails for just under $300, and I expect more for the price. At least the improved plastic processing and the adjustable lumbar support. If there is a "V2" Air chair and it fixes the shortcomings of this model, it could be one of the great office chairs and I look forward to using it. But this is not the chair for me. The Harmony Air chair wowed me and I had high hopes. With such expectations and the price I think this is only a 3 star product. It could have been 4 stars if the lumbar support was adjustable or better positioned, at least for me. Hope this helps someone.

Pros
  • Bi-directional adjustable armrest
Cons
  • All right
