This unit works!: Collars, Harnesses & Leashes

If you are purchasing this or any other training collar, be prepared to go through a familiarization period first to get your dog used to wearing the collar . . This includes several days of obedience training so your dog knows how to respond to your commands BEFORE you put the collar on. The instructions say you should put the collar on the animal and set the shock level to 1 (lowest) and first see if it responds to the beep, then the shock will start at the lowest level and increase until you see them react. . The instructions will tell you what the "answer" will look like. With this collar, the beep is really difficult for a person to hear, but it is audible for an animal. After a few days (or periods) of collarless work, start using a tone (or beep) in conjunction with your verbal commands to get him/her used to it, both to the tone and to your voice to react. Our dog's behavior changed as soon as we put the collar on and started using the horn. We used the shock on the first level and he squeaked and we were afraid we might ruin him because he couldn't play normally (enthusiastically) with the collar. But after a few days of just using the beep to call him over to us, he started playing more normally. The other day we were in the yard without a collar, and he saw a squirrel and ran to her. I shouted "no", "come on" and he came back. It's the first time he's reacted so quickly. I'm sure it will take a little more work, but I see hope in being out in the yard and not getting him to ignore our commands when he's a deer, a coyote, a squirrel, a... skunk, a turkey, a rabbit, a marmot, or a possum without chasing it. By the way, he's a pet/lab mix.
