This is normal. It's very similar to what I spent $79 on two years ago when I bought my iPad. It surprised me when it recently started falling apart after only two years of moderate use. It just started to crumble. If this one lasts that long, it will be a lot more profitable than spending that kind of money. The only thing I didn't notice is that the back is not transparent, so you can't see the iPad through the lid. But that's not against the terms of the contract. It has a better pen holder than my old one and I like the green much better than the dull gray. And it stands up. These types of covers always confuse me, but they make a coaster if you get it right. You unfold the lid on the back of the iPad and then fold it back against the iPad when it makes sense to do so.
