Review on Harkla Kids Weighted Blanket (7lbs): Cooling Bamboo Toddler Blanket with Plush Minky Duvet - Ideal for Children Weighing 40lb to 70lb by Marcia Davis

Special children sometimes need special help to fall asleep. This weighted blanket was amazing for my son. Highly Recommended

My 13 year old son is autistic and has severe sensory deprivation issues. It's very difficult to get him to organize his sensory input for most of the day, but we seem to be managing it both at home and at his school. Right before bed, it is very important that he gets comfortable and feels the fatigue that his body experiences but sometimes not the mind. Lying under an ordinary blanket doesn't give him the body awareness he craves when he's in such a sitting state, so he'll constantly try to push and pull with his legs and arms, sometimes tying him for hours keeps awake. Naturally, as the frustration mounts, he jumps out of bed and runs around looking for sensory information. Deep hugs or lying next to him and putting my heavy hand on his chest and/or my leg on his work, but only about half the time. My son is a tall guy, 5ft 9in, 172lbs. ., so a 25lb blanket would be more than prescribed for my son's weight, but it works for us and it happens 9 times out of 10. Comfort, there are many blankets for me or my wife. Once he's fast asleep, we remove the blanket after 20 minutes and just leave him nearby in case he wakes up or even moves during the night. This is a protocol that captures the essence of the specificity of this body-consciousness. Sleep with it all night and it becomes the new normal, which then loses its potency when it's most needed.
