I bought this to replace the hard drive I use with Time Machine on my iMac for backups. Got a new iMac that doesn't have Firewire ports so the old one was USB 2.0. I was hoping that USB 3.0 transfer speeds would be 10 times faster than advertised. My first backup was 300MB and took about two hours. This went smoothly, but the transfer rate was terribly slow at times. It doesn't necessarily have to be the drive itself, but it's running slower than I expected. When I got it, I popped it into my iMac and Time Machine gave me a message saying it needed to be erased and reformatted. It took about two minutes, which was enough time to set up my iMac. It's really quiet and smaller than my previous portable hard drive. This is very good value for money.
