Maybe this product was outdated?

None of the fabrics I tried were marked. The edges weren't sharp enough, but even after I tried sharpening them, they still didn't leave a mark on the fabric. Tailor's chalk can get really hard over time and stop marking, so maybe I had a bad batch.
