Review on πŸ“» Enhanced BAOFENG UV-82 VHF UHF FM Dual Band Transceiver Two Way Radio by Gary Stringfield

China wins the gold medal!

How could you not buy this? The 5-watt version doesn't even cost $30. I bought two of these and one more powerful model just to test. Conclusion: Instead of buying 5 new Motorola radios this year as planned, I'm buying 20 UV-82 radios for less than one. Also, Baofeng owns Fozcam and I have never had any problem with their IP cameras. They've actually set some standards that are destroying the competition. The only difference between the standard device and the HP version is the transmission power setting. They seem to be built really well and if you're curious about the sound quality, reception etc just tune in to YouTube to see lots of real and scientific tests. I can talk to a portable phone 30 miles away (Melbourne, FL to Port Canaveral, FL). It has more options than Motorola and I have full access to Rx/Tx in the 136-174MHz and 400-520MHz bands. This includes operating frequencies. So I tuned my first 32 channels to the operating frequencies I normally use in addition to tone mapping (Rx/Tx CTCS, DCS, etc.). In fact, I just uploaded Motorola's settings to Baofeng with their nifty $5 cable. You can't buy walkie talkies at this price point and my RDU4160d fell before them. The only thing that's depressing is the interference when receiving FM broadcasts, but who listens to the radio while sitting at the computer? In an emergency I could contact someone I knew with just a two-way business radio, now with a built-in flashlight I can contact anyone who hears emergency calls or a rock station while I hunt for food.

Pros
  • Ideal for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Electrical outlet required
