China wins the gold medal!

How could you not buy this? The 5-watt version doesn't even cost $30. I bought two of these and one more powerful model just to test. Conclusion: Instead of buying 5 new Motorola radios this year as planned, I'm buying 20 UV-82 radios for less than one. Also, Baofeng owns Fozcam and I have never had any problem with their IP cameras. They've actually set some standards that are destroying the competition. The only difference between the standard device and the HP version is the transmissionโ€ฆ

The radio has a larger form factor and is VERY comfortable in the hand

This is my 3rd Baofeng radio purchase in 1 year. I currently have UV-5R, UV-5R5 and now UV-82. The differences between them are big when you look at UV-82. The radio has a larger form factor and is VERY comfortable to hold. The antenna works better than most standard ducks. The screen and buttons are the same as the UV-5R and there isn't much of a difference in the menu system other than advanced settings. The TX/RX are great - I'm getting much better RX than my UV-5R and the receiver seems aโ€ฆ

Great but painful for FRS privacy codes

This radio isn't for the casual user looking for an FRS or VHF radio, but it's great when you need both and flexibility. Programming a radio for the frequencies FRS, GMRS and VHF is laborious. I made a Youtube video that explains exactly how to do this with no prior HAM experience. Search "Baofeng FRS GMRS VHF Programming UV-82 UV-5R" on Youtube. Most of the videos I've seen were based on HAM experience or didn't show the whole process, but mine is for beginners with no experience at all. Theโ€ฆ

Good range, good features, great price

I have three different Baofeng models and this is my favorite. I liked the UV-82 for the features, range and price. I use them with my kids so I anticipate accidents and if someone gets hurt it's not the end of the world. Using radios as they come out of the box is illegal due to the standard frequencies and you really don't want to upset professionals using these frequencies for commercial or official purposes. However, frequencies can be easily reprogrammed using CHIRP, which is free software

Pros
  • Solid build
Cons
  • Can't remember

UV-82 vs. UV-5RV2: Portable Audio & Video

Basically, I would like to highlight the differences between the UV-82 (this unit) and the UV-5RV2. I have both (and the BF-F9V2+, but it's pretty much identical to the UV-5R except for the power output). 82 feels better in the hand. The case seems to withstand accidental contact with the elements better than UV-5R, but it's not waterproof. It also has fewer sharp edges to get caught on. 82 is about 1 inch taller (body only) than 5R. The 82's number keys are about three times the size of theโ€ฆ
