My wife's luggage rack creaked every time it was opened. I sprayed some white lithium grease but it didn't last very long. I decided that direct application would be better for this purpose. I dabbed a little on my finger and applied it to the top and bottom of the cylinder that goes into the strut body. Applying a little extra to avoid rubbing helped stop the squeaking with minimal effort. With the amount of lube I should be able to fix the squeak if it ever starts again and there are plenty of other noises.
