This is the BEST system I have found. Almost no residue (pellets are also easy to work with if tracked at all) Best odor absorption of any filler I've found and I've tried the best expensive fillers. Yes, you should scoop out the poo as often as possible as it lies on top and cannot be completely covered by the pellets, although the pellets are great for odor control! You almost never have to change bedding pellets, at most once a month for a cat (I usually go longer). You can just put more pellets over it when it starts falling down. I need to have a box in my bedroom and have a very sensitive sense of smell so I needed to get something with exceptional odor control. Purina urine pads are the most absorbent, I've tried the cheaper ones, they're ok, but when you put them in the bin right away, they really do smell like the little bin full of trash I throw them in, I put them on only realizing it, Don't open the tank, and then: PU! Breeze Brand Pads are much better with order control. But even with cheaper pads, they still control urine odor during use. They don't leak at all if you change them once they're full. Cleaning the drip tray is very easy, just take it apart, pour some soapy water into the tub, rinse and dry without scrubbing (until the poop runs). I use a different scoop than the one provided, you'll have to play around with it and see if it works for you or not as small bits of food can go right through the holes in the scoop. I prefer one with smaller holes. The biggest problem! The pads have been VERY sold out lately, very hard to get in any store or online. I've used the cheaper ones from Revain but they're definitely worse. They do their job but I really don't like that Breeze pads are always sold out, most likely a supply chain issue I suppose. I hope they can fix this problem soon!
