Review on πŸ”§ PFP 3 Park Tool Pump Rebuild Kit by Matt Weber

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Don't let this pump get you down.

The PFP-3's Presta fitting is so tight (even with the lever not engaged) that you can separate the valve stem from the tube if you're not very careful when removing the pump head. I was told by a very helpful man at the park (they have good customer service) that valve stem diameters vary. I use threaded rods (Conti tubes). I thought smooth wands might be a good option (threaded wands tend to chew through the rubber compression fit on the pump head), but I've been told smooth wands tend to deflate. Finally I came up with the following solution. Do not push the pump head against the shaft until it stops. Just push it a little until you feel a strong resistance and lock it in place. This approach works for me, although the head tends to deflate as soon as I move the lever to the release position. If the compression fitting wears out, you can then slide the head all the way onto the valve. By the way, you can disassemble these heads by using a hole punch to pry out the metal pin that holds the lever. You can then swap out the compression fittings as the Presta wears out. The clamp fittings are the same for both sides of the Schader and Presta head, you just need to use the wide side down for the Schader side and the narrow side down for the Presta side. This is a simple fix that effectively doubles the life of the head.

Pros
  • Everything is fine!
Cons
  • Mostly fine, but...
