I am now retired but have worked in the radiation detection field for 35 years. Towards the end of my career I designed detectors for various radiation monitoring purposes and I have to say that after some time using this device I made a positive impression on me. The quality seems very good and all functions work. I've only had it for a few weeks so the only aspect I feel has yet to be determined is its durability and only time will tell. I'm using an Am241 source from an old smoke detector to test the Quantum's response before using the device. Note: If you are scanning a small amount of radioactive material, turn on the sound and listen for the increased count rate. It then takes up to two minutes for accurate readings to appear on the screen. Have fun and take your device (with multiple alarms set in the background) with you the next time you go to the doctor or dentist for an x-ray. Some of the readings may surprise you! Head to antique shops and see if you can find old radioactive products from the early 20th century. They are there. The display and data writing capabilities of this device go well beyond the raw reading tools I started using years ago, which has made me a very satisfied customer ever since.
