When my OEM part literally fell apart I ordered this to replace my TB16 docking station. Easy to install (Pull out the rubber plugs at the bottom of the unit, unscrew the two screws). As mentioned, this one has a plastic sleeve on the end of the dock, while the factory part is metal. Durability is not an issue as this area is protected within the dock. There is a suspicion that the original part has overheated and needs an additional heat sink made of a heavy metal housing. I've noticed that it gets a little warmer, but not too much. There doesn't seem to be any functional difference. If you've had a lot of problems with your docking station, the TB cable might be just part of the problem. Early drivers were full of bugs. Google "Dell TB16 Drivers" and select the Dell top link. There are a number of recently updated drivers and firmware. Download and apply them all. (Dell Command Update doesn't find them). Applying the latest versions fixed all of the numerous glitches I was having with the device. So don't blame the cable if you haven't applied all of these updates. This cable appears to be perfectly serviceable, and apart from the minor difference in design mentioned above, it otherwise appears to be manufactured exactly like the original. So far very satisfied.
