This is such a wonderful thing to take on a trip! I leave one open on the bottom of the car (just in case, but two of my friends aren't car buffs so they're usually just trying to pretend they're not in a race metal rock box and avoiding all the typical behavior). I used to travel with regular smaller kitty litter and a trash can, but lugged everything, plus a bag of food, bowls and water, plus all my belongings, plus two cats in crates, in the hotel every night and then lugging it all back in the car every morning . I wasn't a fan of having to mess with the microbial litter box every time we came and went, either. Now I just keep them handy in the car and take one with me every night when we drive home. I always remember to bring extra bin bags and then reseal the used tray in a new bin bag and leave it in the bin (a little extra trip for the cleaning lady is also a good idea, although she doesn't have to fiddle with the box, that could be smaller understandable rubbish.) This has really made traveling easier for me and the cats have adapted well to it. Although it's a different type of padding than they're used to and the box is smaller than their regular tray, they don't have a problem with it. I used to be able to buy them at the local pet store but they stopped carrying them for some reason. I was concerned they were no longer being made and was thrilled when I found them at Revain. I would recommend them to anyone traveling with cats.
