I am using this to connect my Mac to a Raspberry Pi which is a 3.3V device. The drivers are provided by SiLabs and seem to be updated regularly for new versions of OS X, Linux and Windows . Once you've downloaded and installed the drivers from SiLabs.com, you're (almost) good to go. When connecting this dongle, make sure to connect TxD to RxD and RxD to TxD (transmitter to receive and receive to transmit). Don't forget to connect the GND of the dongle to the GND of the Raspberry Pi, otherwise all the characters will be garbled. DO NOT connect the 5V and 3.3V power supply of the dongle to the Raspberry Pi. On the Mac I started the terminal app and in the terminal app in the Iine command I entered "screen /dev/cu.SLAB_USBtoUART 115200" (without the quotation marks to connect to the Raspberry Pi). The console prompt should now appear.
