Betta are very unusual and fun fish and a great and affordable introduction. I have had several Bettas over the years, one of which lived to be 5 years old. Keeping an aquarium clean is the most difficult part of owning it and it can be very stressful for the fish when you take them out of the tank for a water change. Many of the "experts" who say that bettas need big fancy rigs, filters, etc. also say that bettas only live for 2 years. I was drawn to this product when looking to buy bettas for my boys and knew I needed a convenient way to keep them clean and healthy. The set includes bricks, which is nice. Be sure to rinse them thoroughly first as they are very dusty. This could explain the "muddy water" some people complain about. If you add your own rocks instead, make sure they aren't tiny pebbles, otherwise there won't be enough room for debris to wash away with a water change. The tanks give the fish enough space to swim and they feel comfortable. The water got a bit cloudy after the initial setup, but this is NORMAL once the fish settle into their new home. We had no fin rot or other health problems. I like the square shape that allows us to place the aquariums side by side so the males can see and "fight" each other. For a water change, I bought a gallon of spring water and added Jungle Bowl Buddy. tab in the container. I add new water from a jug of purified water after about a day, using the water cup that came with it. The tank cleaning mechanism works well in my opinion. If you look into the waste water tank, some waste will definitely be washed out and the water will look cleaner after adding new water. If you expect a spotless aquarium after adding new water, you are expecting too much from a product. You do NOT have to wash out every piece of feces every time. It degrades over time and is easier to wash off with later water changes. As long as you add fresh water regularly, the fish will be healthy. Bettas need good bacteria in their bowl to stay healthy. Also, make sure you know how much your fish are eating per feed and don't overfeed. We use Hikari Betta Bio-Gold pellets, which float and can be easily removed if the betta doesn't eat them all. to begin proper beta installation. This is an ideal habitat for Bettas, making it easy to care for and enjoy these beautiful animals.
