Review on 🐠 Aqueon LED Background Aquarium Hood by Tropingzz Cece

Great lens hood, great performance

I bought this lens hood to replace an old fluorescent lens hood that I've had for a while. This hood is superb. In terms of aesthetics, the hood itself is what you might expect. It's mostly black plastic with a glass panel to protect the highlights. My only concern is the plastic hinges that allow the front to be raised (for cleaning and feeding). My old hood had very similar hinges, both of which broke over time. I've only had the product for a little over a week, so I can't comment on durability yet. On the whole it appears to be solidly made if not flimsy, but we'll see. Let's talk about LEDs. LEDs are better than fluorescent lights in almost every situation, including outside of the aquarium. I only use LED lamps in my house. They last longer, are cheaper and overall 'cleaner' looking in my opinion. For aquariums, switching to LEDs is one of the best upgrades available. This product takes full advantage of them. On the underside of the lens hood there are two sets of clips for Aqueon's own LED lamps, one of which is included and already installed in the product. Aqueon produces four types of lamps: Day White - a bright white light (one of which is included in the package) Colormax - a combination of red and white LEDs for a warmer color Max Blue - with blue LEDs to create a sea depth effect Beauty Max - a combination of several colors for a rich color spectrum. I personally opted for two Day White lamps since one was already included in the kit. I can try others at a later date. With two, they provide a reasonable amount of light, which should be enough to grow low to medium light plants in a 29 gallon aquarium. Speaking of LEDs, to my surprise, the hood also includes two single blue LEDs for a moonlight effect at night. You have to use a switch to switch from fluorescent to moonlight LEDs, which means you can't put them on a separate timer, but it's still a cool feature that's not really advertised. The power cord is excellent. It actually has a "tear-off" design, similar to what some wired game controllers use. For those of you who don't get what I mean, the power cord is actually made up of two interconnected segments. That way, if you pull the hood out of reach of the cord, the hood will simply detach from the other end to prevent the wires from being pulled out. This is also a very useful feature when you want to remove the entire hood. You don't have to carry the entire power cord with you. Also on the hood there are various perforated cut outs for the filter etc. There are two sizes of cut outs for the HOB filter which is fairly standard. They are both on the left. I just had to knock out the smaller one to fit my filter. In addition, two very small slits have already been cut out at the back for laying cables (for heating, etc.). Finally, there is also a smaller rounded cutout on the right side that will likely be used for a canister filter system or powerhead, neither of which I use. Of course, being plastic, it wouldn't be difficult to make your own cutouts with the right tools. Overall this product is great. I always feel that hoods are a little pricey in general. I still think about it that way, but I'm glad I bought it and I highly recommend it to everyone else.
