To be honest I always doubt myself when I read one star reviews on here. I rely really heavily on a lawyer's advice when making decisions, and sometimes it really works against me. Often I find a product that has 70% or more 5 star ratings, but even three one star reviews can make me question everything I've ever bought on this site. The same would happen with this fountain. Except that the key difference was that I didn't look at the reviews or buy it. One day, while browsing the site to complete my wish list for my birthday, I decided that a fountain would be the ONLY accent my room needed. When I saw the look, I was immediately hooked! While doing other things, I didn't want to lose this item, so I added it to my list for future reference. Well I forgot. And when my birthday came and I unwrapped it, I was both happily surprised and shocked. I would feel so bad if my family spent $20 and it didn't work and when I saw all the one star reviews on Amazon my panic only got worse. Anyway, I installed and turned it on that day and it was great at first. But within twenty minutes the little fountain motor was louder than my ceiling fan! I was so discouraged I thought I would never use this fountain when I took the box apart when, lo and behold, a small piece of white paper fell out. There was a note from the manufacturer stating that you must first THOROUGHLY CLEAN the provided stones and use filtered water when operating the fountain. Thinking I had nothing to lose, I gave it a try. So I took out the stones and cleaned them and also cleaned the well itself and boiled water on my stove. After the water cooled and the stones dried, I reassembled the fountain, placed the stones in it, and poured water in. I couldn't believe it worked so well and so quickly, but it's been a week now and I've been waiting for the engine to start again! It's been perfect so far and I just top it up with purified water when it runs out and I haven't had a single problem at all.
