Just right for old 35mm users

I have replaced my old Pentax PZ-1p and ZX-7 35mm SLRs with this camera. It has most of the professional features of the PZ-1p and many more automatic features than my ZX-7. The build quality is better than any other, with a steel inner frame and a sealed and durable dense material for the body. It feels good in my hand. The kit lens is really impressive and in normal light it achieves the quality of most fast prime lenses. The pictures I took are better than what I could have taken with 35mm. This is partly due to the simplicity of the digital redundancy, but the detail from the 10.2MP sensor is truly stunning. I can use all my old Pentax lenses, even the manual Pentax K1000 that I still have. By the way, that old manual K1000 DSLR still works perfectly, which is one of the reasons I'm such a Pentax fan. Shake reduction is a huge benefit over older cameras, and because it's built into the body, the lenses are a lot cheaper than Canon or Nikon equivalents. I've always thought Pentax glass was just as good as other more expensive brands. This camera is great for point and shoot shooting or for advanced users. 12/16/08 The kit lens needs flash support in low light, so I added an SMC Pentax F/1.4 50mm prime lens. The Pentax DA 55-300mm completes the package. Having used the Pentax k200d for 3 weddings (Pentax AF-540FGZ flash), a trip to Disneyland and some artistic photography I am very happy with the camera. Learning advanced settings has greatly improved my photography. Now I almost never use the auto settings again and I love the RAW+JPEG setting. In very low light and for macro photography, I disable autofocus. When using older "A" or manual lenses, I use the M setting on the command dial, and the CUSTOM menu setting 23 allows the aperture ring to be used. This is a great bridge between amateur and professional cameras.
