Review on Philips MRV640 Magnavox DVD Recorder by Isaac Logan

Don't rush to refuse

This recorder is good for its capabilities. Here are some tips I've come up with to help you get the most out of it: 1. Only use it for recording and not too often for DVD playback. Not only do movies tend to get attached to this thing, but it will save the car's life.2. DVD+R is the standard it was designed for, DVD+RW works well too but usually costs more. I have recorded over 40 discs so far and have had no problems with brands like Memorex and Philips. Buy them in spindles and pay half as much as cases (buy cheap cases separately).3. Do not exaggerate. After a few hours of firing, switch to standby and let cool. This applies to any electronic device. It's also a good idea to protect it from dust when not in use.4. It can block for no apparent reason. If so, turn it off and try the setup again. It's troublesome, but at least you can fix it. Always refer to the manual, especially when a problem arises. The troubleshooting section on the back will most likely fix the problem. Keep that in mind before you return it or get upset. This voice recorder has worked great for me, it performs the basic operations well. One thing to keep in mind before buying is that it doesn't have many of the handy features that other more expensive models might have. It's a bit slow and you'll need to learn how to do some of the more advanced tasks like editing. It's ultimately simple, but after using it a few times, all you have to do is transfer your camcorders/VHS tapes. Connect the cables and press the record button (slightly different than on a VCR). Because of this, I prefer it over DVD recorders that have many more options. However, you cannot burn a DVD in 10 minutes. Shop and get a good deal, you get great bang for your buck.
