I wanted a selfie stick more than a tripod and it works great. There is a small sealed remote control. When the battery dies you have to throw the stick away, which is a bummer. The remote control can also be used with a tripod, which would be better if the tripod was more stable. However, if you are careful, a tripod works as a last resort.
