Fits 2009 Saturn Outlook - Fairly easy to install

2009 Saturn Outlook - Tailgate won't open anymore. That was the problem. Fairly easy to replace - allow about 45 minutes for installation. If your gate is not working and you have a manually operated stern gate, you will need to open the gate from the inside. There is a round plug/cover near the center lower part of the inside of the tailgate. Remove this cover and look inside with a flashlight. With a screwdriver, you can press the lever located there to operate the locking mechanism and open the door. With the door open, use a small screwdriver to remove the handle trim on the rear passenger door. Next, unscrew the two screws that attach the handle to the rear door. Then go to the bottom of the window area, you will see that the tailgate lower trim finishes and the upper trim begins around the window. You need to separate the top panel from the door panel where it meets the bottom door panel - there's a plastic pin (sort of) connecting the top to the bottom panel. To do this, pull the leg of the upper panel towards the center of the tailgate, which will release. You don't have to remove the entire upper door panel, just snap off the bottom legs on each side to reveal the lower door panel. Once this is done, the rest of the lower door panel is simply attached with pins. Use a door panel tool or just pull the panel to remove it. It's a bit awkward since it's overhead, so a mate might come in handy here. There will be a rear door light wiring harness, unplug it and the floor panel can be removed from the car. Now you can see the wiring for the switch - it will be a small two wire connector - mine was green. Disconnect the switch wiring, NOTE which side the wiring harness is on the switch in the door. At this point you may be tempted to remove the two screws holding the 'bay' switch to the tailgate - DO NOT do this - leave those two 10mm bolts there. You can just reach up into the bay where the switch is and press the switch and it will pop up. Almost too easy. Install the new switch by pushing it in from the outer half of the lowered liftgate. Take your time here and make sure it's lined up properly in the opening (I didn't and paid for it). Reconnect and test the wiring before installing the inner door panel.
