Power and clarity in a small package

Well, that was my blind buy after a long research. They replaced some of the Yamaha NS-A638s which sound impressive after 20 years. When I opened the box I was ready to send it back. They are significantly smaller, ranging from a 3-way design with an 8-inch woofer to these. I thought I wouldn't be able to get that rich sound, but oh I was wrong. Yes, they're pathetic to look at, but the design makes them sound twice as great, and the clarity and projection are much better. You'll likely need extra power from your amp to get the full benefit as these are 6 ohm speakers. I run them on the Sony at 140 watts per channel (80 watts per channel should be enough) and the louder you play the better they sound. And that is perhaps the only weak point of a small design, at low volume they sound unimportant, rather "tinny". You can also operate them without a subwoofer, bass is enough from 6.5, but I recommend a subwoofer for the full range. Take the Pepsi Challenge, hook it up to a good amp and play: 1. John Cougar Mellencamp's "Authority Song" (great, punchy rock!) 2. Vines' "Autumn Shade" (lo-fi Hi-Fi)3. Christopher Cross "Sailing" (incredible sound clarity/percussion). If one of these songs doesn't make the hairs on your arms stand up straight, send it back and on your head because it won't satisfy you. Andrew Jones is a MAN. Update: These villains have been around for a year now and they're still impressive. Wow. So in love. Update: 8/2020 Still sexy and fierce. Update 4/2021 Now paired with Marantz 7012 @ 6 OMS. OH MY GOD!
