It has lots of elastic and snap-on details to keep it on the flat bottom panel for safety. All fabric is meant to be spot cleaned (e.g. not in the washing machine) including the bed sheet, which I find very odd. Throw the sheet in the washing machine and see what happens. The fabric isn't very soft either, it's more of a satin material like polyester. I definitely recommend buying a mattress topper and your own sheets. In short, I think that this is the best bassinet? no Will it last long enough to be passed down as a family heirloom? No way. But it's definitely a great deal and you really can't beat it.
