I've been using this under cat litter for over two years. This solved our tracking problem. And it's easy to care for. He didn't smell. TO UPDATE. We needed to move our crate to a higher traffic area and I didn't like this rug so much that I decided to buy something else. First thing I noticed is that he's very uncomfortable on his feet, so I'm sure he's into cat's paws too. If you have it in a place where you need to keep it clean, meaning cleaning it more often, you'll quickly find that it's quite bulky. He is very big and tough. It has holes on both sides, so the slower you go the more you can pour out, both through all the holes and at the end. It's so awkward that I found it impossible not to spill some trash. So I still had to sweep. It does a good job of catching dirt that just sits there, but it's uncomfortable to walk on and easy to spill. I've been using the first one for over 3 years and it never started to smell. I'm only deducting one star because I have mixed feelings.
