Starter rubber. I skated on it over the winter, and there was no wear at all! It would appear that none of the thorns have fallen out. Although it is challenging, I find that I enjoy the challenge more and chose not to go with the easier option on purpose. In regards to the clutch, I will say this: three times I got into nearly life-threatening circumstances on the ice, and the only thing that saved me was having spikes. I watched as they careened into the bump stop in front of me, and as a result, I give the Japanese high marks for both their safety and their durability.
