My cat doesn't really like these

my cat doesn't like it very much. We bought 3 and they are not cheap. They don't want to go through holes, preferring to reach out, digging their claws into the yarn wrapped inside to pull themselves up. I think the problem is that when they go through a hole they have nowhere to put their claws in and not enough room to jump through the hole. We'll try putting a rug or something on it and see if that helps them. But to be honest I've only seen one of my cats climb it voluntarily once. Our other cat, no, and when we try to put her in there she can't get through the middle holes and either jumps too high or yells until we can get her down. Both cats love to climb and play on their cat towers, shelves and our dishes so I know they should be comfortable on wall shelves, it's just the location of the hole, the lack of flat space around it and the fact that they wear it. They don't mind holding on to what I don't think they like.
