Many years ago when my first daughter was born Orajel was used for teething but now that my 9 month old is teething we have found that the original Orajel formula is no longer safe to use due to the benzocaine is. the ingredient it contains as a pain reliever. Apparently, the FDA found that benzocaine can cause a rare condition called methemoglobinemia. This means that the amount of oxygen carried by the blood is significantly reduced because there is too much of a substance called methemoglobin in the blood, which is made worse by benzocaine. 6 years ago I never had this problem with my other daughter but I was too scared to try it with my new daughter. I was happy to see that Orajel came out with a benzocaine-free formula that still numbs the gums of teething babies. I tried it on myself and the taste was good and it went numb in the area where I applied it. When I found it was ok I tried it on my 9 month old who is teething. Let's face it, the new advice of giving them cold tooth rings or washcloths to chew on is nothing like pain gel and not as effective as Orajel. It seems to soothe her aching gums and she seems happier despite teething. She didn't have any negative reactions to it, so we'll use that from now on. It is effective and safe as it does not contain benzocaine.
