These tires are heavy at 2.5 pounds but my Schwalbe Marathon 2" tires weigh about 2 pounds each. Mounted on 1" wide rims, the tires are inflated to a width of 60mm (2.3" to 2.4") and also measure 60mm from rim to tarmac. The narrowest front wheel clearance is at the protruding clevis - I have 1.2mm clearance on each side of the wheel. In the rear I have a gap of about 2mm on each side. The chain rubs slightly on the rear tire when I am in lowest gear for climbing. The ride is very soft and smooth and yet firm at 60psi. The lower tire pressure makes the steering feel heavy. I've always wanted to try this bike with the tallest tires possible and I'll tinker a bit, maybe try to stuff my fenders in there, but eventually I might going back to 2" tires and putting them on the old tandem. Since the Surly is my commuter car, it's already heavy enough that I drive it 10 miles a day.
