Children aged 9 and 12 found them out in half an hour. We used knee pads, wrist and elbow pads, and helmets (sold separately). Ice skates work best on level ground. Even pavement lines can be confusing for a beginner. They work best on small inclines or on smooth, level ground where children can swim downhill. The downside was that the sparkling flint inserts and plain black rear brake pads fell out and broke within hours of very typical kid use. My girls weren't strict with them. I can buy replacement flint pads but not sure I will as the small pads break or fall out so easily. This is definitely a design flaw.
