I have left pictures showing three corners with magnetic closure. The pen holder is built into the "bottom" but magnetically attaches to the top for charging. You can travel anywhere with a pencil. The lid's magnetic snap will keep the pencil in place when the lid is closed if left in the charging position, or just the lid will close by itself with the pencil in the built-in holder. Very good. Yes, it has some weight. No, I haven't dropped my iPad to see how good it is at drop protection.
