Review on Magic Flying Orb Ball Toy by Adam Webbie

Wildly unstable, safe space required

The idea behind these balls is really cool. Essentially, it's a helicopter in a balloon, and it needs to hover in the direction that the inner "helicopter" is tilted. A real helicopter maintains its orientation in flight through the weight of the fuselage. Like a pendulum, it will tend to keep the helicopter upright. Unfortunately, these balls don't have enough weight on the "ground". Instead of floating, they have a strong tendency to tip over. Imagine an overturned helicopter rolling on the ground, bouncing, throwing objects off tables, suddenly taking off off the corner of a wall and becoming tangled in objects on a high ledge. The irony is that it didn't take much weight to solve this problem. I threaded the rubber band through the bottom holes and attached a twisted keychain to it. Those two tiny things provided enough weight for stability (the "pendulum" effect above) without seriously affecting hovering abilities. At some point the battery will discharge and the hanging will also decrease. Obviously we didn't get it, but we've all experienced it with other electronic devices. Personally, I think kids get their money's worth for the first few weeks and then they end up at the bottom of the bin where a dead battery doesn't matter.
