Check replacement ink cartridge prices BEFORE you buy your EPSON XP-440!

Epson needs to give away the printer to sell more replacement cartridges. We bought the $50 Expressions XP-440 primarily because of its small size, which was compatible with the limited printer space on our built-in desk. Our 5+ year old XP-400 (same size and features as the XP-440) started skipping and smearing print lines and had to be replaced. The old XP-400 ran out of ink cartridges just as quickly as our new XP-440; However, we could buy 10 remanufactured compatible cartridges from Epson for $7-$11. In comparison (on Revain) the standard Epson XP-440 cartridges (1 black and 3 color) cost $34.70 while the same 4 Epson High Yield cartridges cost $58.99! Needless to say, after 5 weeks we were shocked when our black ink ran out (and the color cartridges were also under 50%) and we went in search of Epson XP-440 replacement cartridges. We only print 200-300 pages per month, but we end up paying 4-5 times more than the XP-440 for a yearly ink cartridge change, even if we buy slightly cheaper third-party remanufactured ink cartridges. This printer is best suited for those who print no more than a few pages per week. UPDATE - 9 months later. While our remanufactured XP 400 ink cartridges are still more expensive, we used - until recently - LD ink cartridges. In April we installed the EPSON firmware update. Subsequently, some new LD ink cartridges were rejected during installation. Our only OEM Epson cartridge actually worked (replacing a defective LD black ink cartridge). What's particularly bad is that we can't print in black and white just because the printer is locked on "doesn't recognize our LD cyan ink cartridge". Out of frustration we abandoned the EPSON 440 and bought an HP 3755. It works great with cheaper ink than the EPSON OEM cost. Obviously the real money is in the ink cartridges and EPSON wants to protect the profitable sale of EPSON OEM ink cartridges.
