Before you buy an Epson printer, please read this warning

Please read this warning before you buy an Epson printer. Now Epson (with its latest update) is forcing you to buy their expensive ink. They have programmed their inkjet printers to only work with genuine Epson ink cartridges. I spent over an hour with Epson tech support and they said the only way to get my printer working was to swap out 3rd party inks and put in expensive Epson ink cartridges. I have been using third party inks for over two years and now with the latest firmware update I can…

Pros
  • Outstanding design
Cons

Never again, Epson.

I will never buy an Epson product again. In the past, printers I've bought from them have given quality results, but for a very limited time before they started behaving and then failed altogether. On current iterations, they simply bypass the results-getting stage and immediately become irritable. If I try to print on matte paper I may be able to get three copies before the printer goes into a "paper jam/pick error" cycle and refuses to print, although of course there is no paper jam and it…

Pros
  • Free for educational purposes
Cons
  • Compatibility

Do not buy this printer. DO NOT BUY. yes it is cheap Then you need to buy the first pack of ink cartridges around $60 and more for just one box (1 black and 3 colors). Remember that your printer will not work if one of the cartridges is empty even though it still contains ink. And you can't get generic inks much cheaper since the cartridges are new. Epson tries to lure you in and then squeeze every dollar out of your wallet. Choosing Epson means it's cheaper to buy a printer every time you need

Unreliable, poor quality, terrible support

This printer has been giving me a real headache since the day I bought it two months ago and has been unreliable the entire time. I have a new Apple laptop, live in a 5,000-square-foot studio, and I lose connection to my printer every day. For a while I called Epson every day to fix the connection and get it back on Wi-Fi, but now even that doesn't work - the printer can't connect to the network at all. They then told me the problem was the Wi-Fi network (although I have no issues with other…

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • Good but not great

2 years have passed, now in the garbage, problems, problems, problems.

As other reviews have pointed out, it's getting upgrades that remove the ability to print with black ink only and also remove the ability to select print quality, so you always end up printing at the highest quality you can uses the most ink. I did what others have said, reinstalling the CD that came with it and then selecting 'did not receive updates' which allowed only black ink to print and restored the print ink quality. The reason it's in the trash is because it ran out of black ink 5 days

Pros
  • Everything is fine!
Cons
  • Long Delivery Time

Epson needs to give away the printer to sell more replacement cartridges. We bought the $50 Expressions XP-440 primarily because of its small size, which was compatible with the limited printer space on our built-in desk. Our 5+ year old XP-400 (same size and features as the XP-440) started skipping and smearing print lines and had to be replaced. The old XP-400 ran out of ink cartridges just as quickly as our new XP-440; However, we could buy 10 remanufactured compatible cartridges from Epson…

Pros
  • Stylish design
Cons
  • Replaceable
