Works well with the included driver but find your own software

This cable does exactly what I need. I was able to communicate with my machine via INPA, EDIABAS and NCSexpert. My suggestion is to do what I did: find the software you need elsewhere on the internet and use the supplied floppy disk only to download the drivers for the USB-to-Serial chip. This allows you to avoid any "virus" alerts that may be caused by the software on the drive. The drivers included on the supplied CD are digitally signed FT232 drivers, not drivers from unknown sources. If you have to rely on the included software to use this cable, you probably shouldn't be messing with your car with this cable. BMW software is not for the faint of heart, and I highly recommend spending a few weeks researching what you're getting on several forums, educating yourself on how to use the software and where to get it. My installation process was as follows: plugged the cable into my laptop and when asked for a driver I inserted the disc and navigated to the drivers on it. After successfully installing the driver, I installed INPA, WinKFP, EDIABAS and NCSexpert, which I got from other places on the Internet (NOT from the supplied CD). I went into device manager and configured the new serial port to use COM 1 as the identifier. From here I connected the cable to my machine, opened INPA and was able to read and write on the machine without any problems. Note. I am using an old Dell laptop with Windows XP SP3 32-bit and had no problems installing software or drivers. I received a cable with a white board, not a green one. The construction of the cable looks ok (I'm not a pro shop so I don't intend to rate this cable's ability to withstand everyday use and abuse) and I expect it to be good for what I'm using it for, holds. Overall I am satisfied with this purchase.
