Buying a boombox has become a real challenge these days. It's time to move with the times and look for a good portable boombox that offers great sound and can take advantage of the latest formats and features. Although I still had some cassettes, I had no need to look for a device that can play cassettes. Many boom boxes on the market today still offer a cassette player. This might be a great convenience for some, but I really wanted to get a device that was "sharpened for the future". Standards are always changing, but I felt Sony's ZSR60BT would fit, at least for now. I bought the device through Revain and so far I am very satisfied. Upon unpacking the box, I found that the boombox is a bit smaller than I initially thought. The build quality is acceptable for a product in this price range. It feels a little light which may disappoint some but all buttons and knobs are well designed. As with anything, if you take proper care of the device, you should have reliability issues. The device is pretty basic - it offers CD, CD-R, CD-RW playback, MP3 playback (and via USB stick), AM-FM radio and even USB to CD recording. USB option. Rather than messing around with a CD-R, I usually just pop a flash drive into the unit and it plays all my MP3 and WAV files with no problems. An added benefit for some is that this boombox will also recognize and play .MP4 files if you have them. FLAC or other high-resolution formats such as DSD etc. are not supported. While Sony is pushing "Hi-Res" audio, I expect later models will include playback of these formats in the future. This probably isn't a big deal, however, unless you're a die-hard audiophile. Since I mainly listen to talk shows and lectures (I occasionally put music CDs along with it), I find this device perfect for my needs. As for the sound quality, I was very satisfied. Of course, we're at the mercy of the laws of physics here, and not much sound can be reproduced from such a small speaker. The sound is relatively warm here; There are no squeaks or creaks, which is always a good sign. Depth and soundstage for music are quite decent; However, I think that the separation between the instruments could be a little better. However, it's still a pleasant noise that can get pretty loud. The MEGABASS function adds a little bass appeal; With this feature disabled, I immediately noticed the difference. I generally prefer bass boost for both music and talk radio programs. Unless you have unreasonable expectations, I believe you will find the Sony ZSR60BT to be a very satisfying portable boombox. As I mainly use this device for recording voice broadcasts and occasionally CDs, it's perfect for my needs. If you're an avid audiophile or really want to listen to music, I know Sony has an upscale model (around $200) that's probably a better option than the 60BT. I expect it will be a very big step forward, but I don't think you can beat this sub-$100 device for playback, features, and convenience. 5 stars, highly recommended.
