I bought this to use on a large surface area portable desk and it worked great for that. However, when I was traveling, the desk required checked baggage, so I purchased a WorkEZ BEST laptop stand (pictured). After trying several positions (some of which didn't stay in place) I settled on the position shown in the picture, which allowed the external monitor to be pressed slightly against the back and sides of the laptop screen to achieve this prevent slide to the desktop and stabilize everything. The monitor arm comfortably holds my Surface Pro, and it barely fits (but fits!) the pictured Corprit 15.6" portable monitor. I definitely use the included Allen wrench to tighten the mount from time to time. Profession through digital nomads.
