It will get better after washing.
I have the same towel as @Belle and have been using it for a while and have never had any problems with it. I'm not sure what it took to get this towel in this condition, but it's cotton linen, not iron bars. Here's a photo of my towel after three washes; it's still good and seems to have gotten even better after washing.
