Very informative

was a lot of fun. We invited another homeschooling family to join us for this project. I printed out some bone charts from Pinterest and all the kids (and adults) went to town to collect pellets. Some pellets even contained more than one mouse. For some reason I thought the owl pellets would stink, I mean they are discarded from dead animals. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the granules are completely odorless.

Pros
  • practical article
Cons
  • so far so good

Skull and Bones!

I was very happy with what we found. The pellets included a bone guide which was helpful. My 2 kids each made 2 balloons. Good size granules. There was a lot of fur to tear through and it was easy to break small bones. But once we found the skull and some of the larger bones, it was pretty exciting. Each tablet contained at least 1 skull. We could see how the jaw is attached and the teeth. We were also able to identify leg bones and ribs.

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Quick start guide

Interesting but a little heavy and difficult to breathe.

This was our first time dissecting owl pellets so I have no comparison. were soft (therefore they were easier to dissect). All had many bones, but the harder ones, most broke trying to pull them out. Also, we did all 6 at once (2 kids) and had to take a break because the dust was so bad it was irritating our sinuses and eyes. So watch out - maybe do them outside (unlike us) to make it easier for you to breathe. Especially if your child has asthma!

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly
