The opening of a standard 5 x 7 mat needs to be a quarter inch smaller on the sides to allow for some overlap. So this must be a joke: the holes are cut to be exactly 5x7, so the 5x7 photo will fall through the hole. The solid film allowed me to line up my photos with almost no gaps. But it was an unnecessary hassle (which I had to deal with because the framed photos were a gift and I didn't have time to find new carpets). Recommend taking mats elsewhere.

I have ordered mats for my 5x7 photos that I have boxed for sale. The 4.9 x 6.9 inch hole did not provide enough overlap with the 5 x 7 inch photos to easily mount them. Trying to center the photos so the carpet covered all 4 sides was challenging and required multiple attempts for each photo. A 4.75" x 6.75" hole would have overlapped 1/8" on each side instead of 1/20" on each side as it does. The matte board itself is on the thin side but perfectly acceptable for what I need. So far they have worked great, I supplied them with frames to replace the cheap ones. I also wanted acid free as it would contain acrylic paintings and not paintings. well, and helps keep a small barrier between the painting and the glass. They're also very thick, so you need enough space in the frame, so I had to cut them off the sides, but only about an inch, so I didn't find it useful to remove the star.
