It can find studs or their total area. but he seems to be finding other things too. It's so inaccurate that it's useless on both plastered walls and drywall. I ended up giving this to my toddler to add to his tool/toy. Sometimes he waves it and enjoys the beep.

This nail finder sometimes can't find a nail in my whole wall. Other times, my wall is a big post. I use 1/2" thick painted drywall for this. I ended up tapping the wall to find a nail, this method worked better than this nail finder. Don't waste your money on this product, buy something else.

This stud finder can be a bit difficult to find and the black felt pads leave very light black streaks on my walls. I believe what is hidden within the walls distorts the testimony too much. This would be great for beginners, but if you're willing to spend a little more money, consider something more reliable.

Not even measuring 1/2 inch drywall with visible spikes on the other side. Maybe it's made for paper walls. The return costs are almost equal to their value. Black & Decker (Sorry Function) 100 (Non) Wood Stud Finder is retiring. You will regret the purchase. Just throw a $5 bill out the window and save time.

It doesn't work very well and the little foam pads on the back left dark streaks all over my paintwork! I ran the device back and forth on the wall as intended and the pads on the back left nasty streaks that I couldn't wipe off. The wall looks terrible now. Very disappointed. It works only mediocre to find studs. I have a thin layer of plaster over drywall with mahogany spikes and this thing doesn't do a good job of finding the spikes. Thumbs down.
