We bought this bookcase for our office so we can keep our current reading nearby and off the desk. The top shelf has underlay just over 10 inches for large books, while the rest of the shelf has underlay just under 5 inches. Suitable for hardcover books, but not for large books. Thankfully, we've read other building guide reviews and carefully compiled them.

First of all, this shelf is amazing. It's not chipboard and it looks like it will collapse when holding weight. Bravo, 5/5 for materials only. It is similar to bamboo wood but strong and hard.
