Denim makes a great base! Gesso and paint just slide over it. The watercolor paper is great! Super thick and big gesso'd or not! The burlap is very dense and almost like a painting on a rough canvas!

I have found the Blue Journal much easier to work with than the Black Journal of which I have made two. There is no brown kraft paper or canvas in the blue magazine. It has cream burlap and is woven more tightly than the other magazine's burlap, blue denim, and lots of thick watercolor paper that I believe has cotton in it. Watercolor paper is thick, it can be washed without damaging the surface. Overall it's easier to create and I fill it up quickly.
