Yes, they smelled like chemicals when I unpacked them. But after leaving them open for a few days the smell went away. All new brushes need to be brushed to remove loose bristles. I've had this set for a year just because I've been using lip brushes and the eyeliner brushes have been fine. I also used blush and contour brushes although they were quite harsh on the face and lost their shape. Some of the big ones had hair falling out and the small ones had the entire metal part that attaches the brush to the wooden handle falling out. After you wash the brushes, they become harder. They weren't that soft to begin with. That’s how I found Ulta cosmetic brushes a year later.
