When I first unpacked it smelled horribly of formaldehyde or some kind of bad smell. It took over a week for the gas to dissipate and the hat to become wearable without making me cry. I have a smaller head but this hat is great. I usually pull mine all the way down so it doesn't move while I work and really stays in place. It doesn't crumble at all and keeps its shape after washing. I tend to air dry mine overnight and they are ready to use the next day. After I adjusted the strap for my L/XL head, the extra strap didn't fit in the slot designed to hide the extra strap.
