Free NAS alternative when trying out new systems

It's very easy to install, configure and manage all of your file servers from one location with this software. There are many things that I like about it, but honestly there isn't anything too bad either. The GUI has some quirks sometimes, but not much. Honestly I couldn't really think of any downsides. If you're looking for something relatively simple to use to host everything in house then freeNas might be what you need. We have used this product over multiple different applications and we…

Highly recommended solution and very good customer service

It's super easy to use, it gives you tons of flexibility in terms what kind/size drive your want with virtual disks for each one or just using NAS as if they were all local drives! I have used this product since version 7 (it was free back then). They've added some nice features like iSCSI support which makes things even better now that we can do block level replication across multiple servers without having any issues at either end - no more timeouts when doing data transfers between two…

Pros
  • Easy to set
  • Flexible storage options & configuration.
  • Great community forum available too :)
  • Lots / lots o' choices regarding software packages installed alongside OSes running under Linux kernel 2+ versions.
  • Works perfectly fine via VMware Workstation 11 client !:)
Cons
  • Price? Not really though

FreeNAS - FreeNAS is the perfect NAS for me.

I love that it's free, very powerful, can be used as a NAS or file server. It's easy to use for even novice users. If you're looking for something simple, this is perfect! Easy to install and set up. The interface looks outdated, but it works just fine. I've been using FreeNAS to store my media files for about 4 years now. I have no complaints. It does what I need it to do without any problems. I would recommend this product to anyone who needs a basic file/NAS server. I'm storing all of my…

Pros
  • Very straightforward UI with clear instructions throughout setup process.
  • Great way at backing your data
  • Can run headless so there are many configurations available within same box
  • Easy remote management via webUI if wanted
Cons
  • A bit dated design (looking into updating)
  • Not much documentation online

Great alternative if open source ZFS is unavailable

I like that it's free, has great community support, easy setup for new users. It does not have native GUI for setting up RAID arrays but you can do so with command line tools. If you are looking to build your own NAS then FreeNAS will be good fit as its very stable software (it hasn't changed much in years). We use FreeNAS at work and it works well. Our only issue was we needed more space when building our file server. But this could also be because of other services being installed on same…

Pros
  • It's free and you can build your own NAS without any issues
Cons
  • I have to use command line tools for this
