Description of Fulton Sanding Attachment Interface Mandrel

Perfect for sanding wooden bowls, platters and more. Sanding curved surfaces like wooden bowls can be challenging and can take a long time to finish when sanding by hand. Sanding your project by hand can also cause fatigue and produce unsatisfactory results. The 1⁄4” shank sanding mandrels have a thick padded base that conforms to concave or convex surfaces. Simply secure the mandrel into a variable speed drill or flexible shaft and you’re ready to go. Once the mandrel is mounted and secured, you have a choice of what pad you would like to use. The padded base is a firm pad that works well with broader curved surfaces. The medium interface pad works well with tighter curves like those found on larger wood turned bowls. The soft interface pad is perfect for smaller, tighter curves and radii. You can also use both interface pads at the same time for even smaller, tighter radii when needed. The padded base mandrel and each interface pad are hook and loop compatible and will accept most any corresponding size hook and loop sandpaper disc. The shank is 1⁄4” in diameter and will fit most any standard size drill style chuck. The mandrel pad is a firm foam material designed to give enough flexibility for larger convex and concave curves. When you need a softer touch, add one of the softer interface pads to the base to create just the right amount of give for sanding your project. These sanders have been designed to be used at slower and more controlled speeds. Heat is the enemy of any sanding project. When using these sanders on a lathe, we recommend that you set lathe at the slowest speed possible. This allows you to rough sand the bowl without burning the bowl or damaging the sander. As you step up in grits, you may want to increase the speed of your drill to quicken the sanding process. When using this sanding system, it is recommended to use the sanders in an electric, variable speed hand drill. Variable speed hand drills give you the ability to be more precise and allow you to control the speed of the sander rotation. This set comes with full color instructions on how to use them. Please note: These sanders are NOT designed for use in high speed grinders.

Abrasive discs suitable for disc grinder

The grinding wheels themselves do what they are supposed to do. The problem is that you have to do everything by hand, the discs don't stick to the velcro that you put in the drill. I tried about 4 different discs with different grit and got the same result. I think I got what I paid for - not very much.

Pros
  • These grinders are designed for use at slower and more controlled speeds. Heat is the enemy of any sanding project. If you are using these grinders on a lathe, we recommend setting the lathe to its lowest speed. This allows the bowl to be coarsely ground without burning the bowl or damaging the grinder. If you add grit, you can increase the drilling speed to speed up the grinding process.
Cons
  • Slightly torn

Works like a champion; but the bases could be stronger

I sharpen firewood. It saved me a lot of time compared to hand grinding on a lathe. When grains fall into the bowl in different ways; You still need to sand with different grit directions for each area to get a clean, scratch-free surface. This works very well.

Pros
  • When using this sharpening system it is recommended to use sharpeners in a variable speed hand held electric drill. Variable speed hand drills give you the ability to be more precise and control the speed of your grinder. This set comes with a full color instruction manual. Please note: These grinders are NOT intended for use in high speed grinding.
Cons
  • There are doubts

Paper and Pad Separator

I was really looking forward to using this kit, it looked like a lot of discs of different sizes and grits and I thought it would be a good addition to my finishing process. I was very disappointed when, after a single use, the velcro on the back of the 80 grit paper detached from the pad. Now I can't get it off the pad and the pad is practically unusable. Looks like a problem with the glue on the paper. Really disappointed with the quality.

Pros
  • The soft base rod and each interface pad are Velcro compatible and will fit most Velcro sandpaper discs of any suitable size. The shank is ¼ inch in diameter and fits most standard sized drill chucks. The mandrel pad is a hard foam that offers enough flexibility for large convex and concave curves. If you need a softer feel, add one of the softer interface pads to the base to get just the right amount of sanding allowance for your project.
Cons
  • Expensive
