Type of review

These fan/fan resistors are destined to fail after a few years. The original design of the BMW E39 was flawed. This OEM unit failed after only 3 months but the supplier replaced it for me. I didn't install it because I meanwhile bought another resistor from my local BMW dealer. Despite the BMW plastic bag, the label on the block was exactly the same, so I'm assuming there's only one manufacturer of these resistors. Ah, these are fixed costs.

Pros
  • High-quality assembly
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.

Try this first good heating solution

If you're having trouble with your BMW's interior fan, try this first. I figured I must have a bad fan and the dashboard would have to be disassembled for that. I didn't want to do that to my old BMW and couldn't afford the repair. I came across this resistor as a possible culprit in the BMW blogs. Of course it was, and $50 fixed the problem. A pleasant surprise. A word of caution: it's hard to get out. There are many guides on the blogs. Just be patient, find the clip holding the resistance…

FALSE ADVERTISING! for heating

The description says Valeo, but I got a cheap fake from Sitronic. The heatsink pins are soft, thin, and poorly conductive, causing the device to heat up quickly and the fan to turn off after a short time. The fan only runs when the FSU is cooling down. Tested on 2 different BMWs and with the same result. Both machines also worked flawlessly with one of the nice Valeo FSUs I still have. Valeo, or a true competitive OE replacement, is equipped with tough, durable heatsink pins for proper heat…

Fixed problem on E46 2001

This power amp resistor (Valeo) fixed the intermittent fan assembly shutdown on my 2001 E46 that recently stopped working. For me, the installation took about 2 hours (with warm-up breaks). Recommend a T-20 socket or a long screwdriver, a Phillips screwdriver and a good little flashlight. The design of this replacement part is different than what you are most likely to choose, but it works great. As other reviewers have pointed out, I also agree with the recommendation to buy German-made parts…

Went to my 2001 530i e39 and fixed the fan

This fitted my 2001 530i E39 perfectly. It was slightly larger than a factory part, but easily fit in the tiny hole under the glove box. I was able to replace this part in my driveway in about 5 minutes after work with a flashlight. This will solve the "possessed" fan motor problem that is so common on BMWs. This part has been installed in my car for 6 months and also solved the random battery drain issue. during AC/heating operation, or your battery dies randomly overnight, you can…

Works reliably with spare parts

This is a fairy tale about 3 resistors. My original device seemed to have failed and drained the battery overnight. I ordered this unit and another from another site to compare. This block matched the resistance of my original block, while the other (cheaper) block was significantly lower. This unit also had the correct manufacturer's labels, which is what I was hoping for. This new unit installed as expected and my fan motor is working great. Also, the battery drain issue seems to be resolved.

  • Pleasant to use
Cons
  • Has problems

Improved, more efficient design than the original.

After my battery died prematurely, I connected an ammeter and noticed a sporadic current drain of 3 to 5 amperes with the ignition switched off. I listened carefully and heard the faint sound of a fan motor spinning intermittently at a very low speed. I found this (old) part to be the culprit. I believe the old design had less efficient power FETs/transistors which is why older models have larger heatsinks. If they get too hot, it creates a thermal runaway situation where they keep turning the…
