UPDATE AFTER 5 YEARS OVER

UPDATE: In 2020 Revain asked me to answer a question and I understand they still have this Kingspec 16GB SSD for about the same price as in 2014 to sell. The price was very competitive in 2014 so I gave it 5 stars but not in 2020. Still working after 5+ years of light use. However, in 2019 I bought a faster 240GB SSD for $34. This product just can't compete with others right now!

Pros
  • Don't waste too much time
Cons
  • too stupid

Well, not the best, but still worth considering for many reasons.

I received an updated version with a finished SATA III controller. Although actual bandwidth doesn't fully utilize even SATA-II (300MB/s supported), NAND flash speeds are reasonable when writing and very durable when reading. The system I installed this on was previously booted from a USB 2.0 flash and the boot time has been greatly reduced! SWAP RW is much faster on FreeBSD. This drive was purchased for a FreeNAS server running a large ZFS disk cluster. With 32TB of share space, I noticed a…

Decent but potentially expensive

Bought a pair of these for use in low power networking gear. They were acceptable. What does stand on the balance sheet, though, is the fact that the 16GB model was selling for $18 each at the time (not $31 + shipping as I just discovered), including shipping via slow ship from Asia. As a result, I'll look back again when I need more inexpensive SSDs.

  • Excellent overall performance

Great for ESXi, good for storage

I bought this for an ESXi (5.1) home server, I was running ESXi from a normally spinning disk, but the disk started to fail. Knowing that ESXi runs mostly in memory, I then booted ESXi from a USB flash drive, but the boot time was slow, I also encountered multiple PSODs even after doing the recommended "Flash Drive Settings". would have. So I was looking for a small capacity SATA SSD, and the KINGSPEC KSD-SA25.7 2.5" SATA-Ⅲ 2 CHANE SSD (16GB) is spot on, ESXi recommends >8GB. So ESXi loaded…

Works like a champ.

I bought this SSD over a month ago and installed Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon on an older PC with a Core 2 Duo 1.86 processor and 2GB RAM and it runs like a champ. It works much faster than my old HD. No freezes or issues of any kind. Loads very quickly.

Fast and cheap for computers and accessories

I'm using this on a 1U server as the OS drive to run Ubuntu. Primary storage is managed by an 8TB software RAID 5 array. I keep the databases on an SSD and the server is smoking fast, booting in just under 13 seconds! Remember this is running on an Ubuntu server on a dual XEON quad core server with 32GB ECC RAM, so YMMV.

Great little SSD for such a low price

Great little SSD for such a low price. I installed one of these in a Dell Inspiron 1405 along with Win7 32-bit. I use about 11 GB of storage space, of which 4 GB are free. I've used Horizon Data Systems' RebootRestore to "freeze" an image, and I have a small, fast laptop that's great for basic tasks like web browsing and remote desktop.

Pros
  • Good stuff
Cons
  • Maddening
